By Leigh Signal | CNNFor most of us, the prospect of a long-haul flight is exciting, mixed with a few nerves. We’re off somewhere different – perhaps a vacation, maybe to catch up with friends or family. Even work can be more interesting when you’re in a new location.Of course, you want to arrive fully rested and ready to go. Sushi Salon, known for omakase and unique fish killing, sets its sights on Oakland

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:17:47 GMT

If you love sushi and have $185 to blow, there are few better ways to go than the 18-course omakase meal at Sushi Salon. A pop-up that’s been operating from Berkeley’s Fish & Bird Sousaku Izakaya, the operation has clenched a devoted following for its wild and creative array of sushi and a technique of preserving fish by spiking their spinal cords with wire.Joji Nonaka and Anna Osawa, who before founding Sushi Salon worked in Alameda’s highly regarded Utzutzu, have been searching for a brick-and-mortar for a while. Now it appears they’ve found it in Oakland, according to a beverage-license notice in the window of 4008 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, next to Arthur Mac’s and the MacArthur BART station. The former States coffee shop is a small space, so it’ll be interesting to see how Nonaka and Osawa will squeeze their restaurant within, and whether they’ll offer to-go meals like they’ve been doing at Fish & Bird. There’s no me...

Gas prices hit 2023 highs as oil stays hot

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:17:47 GMT

By Matt Egan | CNNNew York  — Prices at the pump climbed to their highest level of the year on Monday as oil prices push past $92 a barrel.Normally, gas prices cool off after the summer driving season ends on Labor Day. But the opposite has happened this year as Saudi Arabia’s and Russia’s aggressive supply cuts lift oil prices. The national average for regular gas hit $3.88 a gallon on Monday, the highest price since October 2022, according to AAA. Gas prices have jumped by five cents a gallon in the past week alone.Rising pump prices are an unwelcome sight for consumers, the Federal Reserve and the White House as they threaten to undo progress on the fight against inflation.Although the national average is well below the record high of $5.02 a gallon set in June 2022, gas prices are now 20 cents above where they were at this point last year.Eleven US states now average $4 or higher, including Colorado, Oregon and Arizona, according to AAA. Diablo Valley College coach to be arraigned on pimping, trafficking charges The water board approved the agreement on Thursday after enforcement action was taken related to the spill, which began when an electrical failure occurred at a pump station. According to the water board, Salinas responded immediately to the problem and recovered a significant portion of the untreated wastewater. However, 53,000 gallons ended up in Natividad Creek. The ...
