KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — There are sandbags around the statues and anti-tank obstacles by the side of the streets, trenches in the nearby forests and land mine warnings in the woods. Signs painted on walls point to the nearest shelter, while air raid sirens occasionally wail across the city, which still sometimes comes under missile attack. But against this backdrop of war, residents of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, are living their lives as normally as they can while Russia’s invasion of their country continues into its second year.Although many fled in the opening stages of the war, residents have gradually returned to their homes as Russian forces were pushed back from north of the city last year, and the conflict became centered mainly in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine.Shops, restaurants and bars are open — even if customers have to wrap up their evenings early and rush home in time for the 11 p.m. curfew. Encontraron una manera de mantenerlo durante mucho más tiempo de lo que esperaban, porque encontraron un gran avance”, continuó el presidente.Biden probablemente se refería a la larga batalla de Carter contra el cáncer que padece. MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid got used to pulling off dramatic comebacks in the Champions League last season. Now it needs to avoid one to keep its title defense going. It will be Liverpool needing to do something magical at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Wednesday to reverse a 5-2 loss from the first leg in the round of 16.It definitely won’t be easy — no away team has ever erased a three-goal loss from the first leg in the Champions League. Only five times the team that lost at home rallied in the second leg, with Manchester United the only one to overcome a two-goal deficit in a round-of-16 matchup against Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.Liverpool did manage a huge comeback at home in the 2019 semifinals, rallying against another Spanish club, Barcelona. It had lost 3-0 at the Camp Nou before pulling off a 4-0 win in the second leg at home to keep alive a run that eventually ended with the team winning the trophy. Sweden’s PM: Finland likely to join NATO without us

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:25:13 GMT

Turkey’s reluctance to approve Sweden’s NATO candidacy is hampering chances that Stockholm and Helsinki will join the military alliance together, the Swedish prime minister said Tuesday.“It is not excluded that Sweden and Finland will ratify in different steps,” Ulf Kristersson said at a press briefing, according to public broadcaster SVT.The likelihood of this scenario “has increased” in recent weeks, Kristersson added, highlighting the ball was now in obstinate Turkey’s court.Spurred by Russia’s war on Ukraine and the rising threat coming from Moscow, Sweden and Finland officially asked to join NATO last May, and later committed to joining the alliance together. Most members of the transatlantic military alliance quickly signed off on the joint application — except Hungary and Turkey, whose national parliaments have yet to ratify the membership bids.Although Stockholm has taken steps to ease some of Turkey’s concerns — including...

MassDOT expects to deploy more than 3,000 pieces of equipment during late season nor’easter

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:25:13 GMT

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation expects to deploy about 3,000 pieces of equipment during Tuesday’s daylong nor’easter, according to Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver. As of 7 a.m., MassDOT already has over 500 pieces of equipment deployed and is updating those numbers quickly.“These late season storms are really tough,” Gulliver said. “When you’re looking out the window and you’re looking at rain, you’re thinking this is going to be easy. It’s not, this is going to deteriorate very quickly as the temperature drops and the snowfall starts.” Gulliver said one of the biggest challenges with storms that start with rain is the roads cannot be pretreated. “When it starts raining and you have warm roadways, pretreatment is ineffective, and that means that when the snow really hits it’s going to ice up very quickly. When you have rates that we are talking about, two inches per hour, our snow plows a...
