Three years, three teams, three World Series titles: Smith’s journey a first in big leagues

PHOENIX (AP) — Will Smith’s been a really good relief pitcher in the big leagues for 12 years. He’s also got a knack for being in the right place at the right time. The left-handed reliever became the first player in MLB history to win three World Series in a row with three different teams after the Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 on Wednesday night to clinch the franchise’s first title.“As a kid, in your front yard playing catch, when you’re first falling in love with baseball, it’s always 3-2, bottom of the ninth, Game 7 of the World Series,” Smith said after Game 4. “You always dream of being in these situations. So to be lucky enough to do it three years in a row, it’s something I don’t take for granted.”Smith — a 2019 All-Star selection who grew up in Georgia — was a key piece of Atlanta’s bullpen in 2021 when the Braves won the title, throwing four scoreless innings during the World Series. He was also on the Houston Astros’ roster f...

Only debate of Mississippi governor’s race brings insults and interruptions from Reeves and Presley

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves and Democratic challenger Brandon Presley insulted and spoke over each other several times Wednesday night in their only debate of a rough-and-tumble campaign season, presenting sharply contrasting plans for the state. The televised debate happened six days before the general election in a deeply conservative state where Republicans have held the governor’s office for the past 20 years.Presley said state government “is bought and sold to the highest bidder,” with Reeves demanding campaign contributions before meeting with people.Reeves said that Presley, a utility regulator, has taken questionable campaign contributions from “solar panel buddies … that have tried to run the oil business out of America.”The debate was held before a small audience in the WAPT-TV studio in Jackson. It aired on the ABC affiliate in the Jackson area and statewide on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. One flashpoint came in respon...

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Two-time Olympic champion Kyle Snyder led the United States wrestling team to four Pan American gold medals on Wednesday, the first day of the event in Santiago. The 27-year-old, one of the top athletes competing in Chile, easily won all his bouts to secure his third consecutive continental title. The star wrestler’s teammates came close to dominating just as much, and just like Snyder they are likely to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics next year and fight for medals there, too. Snyder later said he had his mind in 2024 as soon as he won the final in Chile.“My next thing is just take a little break and get back on the main train,” Snyder told The Associated Press after his title bout. “We’ve got the holidays, then there’s a couple of tournaments, one in January, one February. I need to get ready for the Olympic trials, April 19th and 20th. That’s what I’m going to be looking forward to getting ready the most.”Snyder has been affected by injuries during...

Youngkin issues executive order after unprecedented series of fentanyl-related overdoses at Northern Va. school

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 16:31:15 GMT

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order Wednesday aimed at bolstering the response to school-related drug overdoses, after at least eight opioid-related overdoses were reported last month at a high school in Loudoun County. The order directs the Virginia Department of Education to issue guidance to school divisions to notify all parents of school-connected overdoses within 24 hours, according to a news release from the governor’s office.Youngkin said Loudoun County Public Schools reportedly waited more than 20 days to notify parents of the overdoses.“Parents have a right to know what’s going on in their child’s lives, especially in schools. Overdoses that occur on school grounds or are connected to the school must lead to an immediate parental notification,” Youngkin said. “School administrators’ first instinct when there is a problem cannot be to delay relevant information on critical children’s health and safety matters.”The ...

National parks and forests in Colorado will be free on this day "Be mindful of young wildlife, who are still kind of navigating how to go through their migration period," CPW's Bridget O'Rourke said. Both agencies have teamed up to construct underpasses and high fences to protect wildlife near roadways. For a list of the finished and ongoing wildlife crossing projects, please see the Colorado Wildlife and Transportation Alliance’s Website at coloradowta.com.One such project is on Interstate 70, heading up to the high country between Lookout Mountain and Genesee.
